It was hard to find one dominant story today, so here’s a mix:

As the pirates demand ransom and Obama avoids answering questions,

WTF?! Where is “President” Obama? Why doesn’t he want to answer questions about this situation? Yesterday, reporters asked him about it, and Obama gave a typically snotty response: “Guys, we’re talking about housing right now.”

we are being reassured by Politico that POTUS is updated on the situation

he White House says the president has received updates on paper and by phone on Saturday. Administration aides met at 8 a.m. and at 2 p.m. to discuss the four-day-old situation off the east coast of Africa.

Whew! For a second there I thought the US captain was in some kind of danger and no one cared….

In the Freedom of Speech rights, we have the news that Goldman&Sachs is gunning for this blogger.

Please help him with any pertinent information – or maybe funds if you can.

The cost of war – that “almost trillion” equal to our deficit

would push the costs of the two wars to almost $1 trillion since the September 11, 2001

The US budget deficit hits almost one trillion dollars in the first half of the current fiscal year,

is visited by LA Times which concludes

If Congress approves the latest funding request, as expected, the Iraq war will have cost about $694 billion, making it the second most expensive conflict in U.S. history behind World War II.

Notably, more expensive than the war in Vietnam

Added to the amount spent through 2008, it would mean the Iraq war will have cost taxpayers a total of about $694 billion. By comparison, the Vietnam War cost $686 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars and World War II cost $4.1 trillion, according to a Congressional Research Service study completed last year.
.

Some of that price tag must come – although the article doesn’t make the clear connection from the fact that

U.S. officials in Iraq also have relied heavily on private contractors, used to protect diplomats and defend bases, transport provisions and staff essential services such as providing food.

In other words, the war profiteers made it a much bigger bundle this time around.

And, just to end on a fun note:

As everyone is buzzing about the dog Obama will grudgingly, belatedly, finally maybe getting – I cannot help by being amused by the irony. Mr “no Girlie dog” will get a poodle

yeah, they call it “water dog” rather the German world for it (poodle) and Portugese instead of French, but see for yourselves: This is a Portugese Water Dog

Make no mistake: I adore poodles (as the better part of the mix that is my own girlie dog ).

Poodles are the second smartest dog around  after the border collies and it’s not their fault that their amazing hair makes owners groomers disrespect them with ridiculous haircuts :

Grooming styles are optional. If mother nature is allowed to prevail, a poodle looks like these two

I don’t know if the Portugese poodle is as smart as its French counterpart, but the irony of the Girlie Dog is delicious.

And speaking of dogs and their givers: Ted Kennedy offering the dog didn’t help with Caroline’s appointment as ambassador to the Vatican. The almost NY Senator struck out again

Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Ms Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

Yet another case of delicious irony, considering how she hesitated to answer questions on her stands on abortion when she was vying for Hillary’s seat

Chris was interviewing Kerry Kennedy (for the hundredth time,
it seems), selling Caroline. Chris asked Kerry about Caroline’s
position on abortion.

Kerry answered that she DIDN’T KNOW.
