They are quoting themselves on the cover

You would think that these NSA spying revelations would give right wing Post a platform to bash the administration – like many Republicans do. But nooo. Faced with a choice between authority/ the rights of the people Murdoch always makes the wrong choice, you can bank on it (to be fair, all media does it). So here is the Post bravely going after the whistleblower – right after some breasts, of course

and the planet began to heal?

I guess he forgot to specify that the slowing down of the oceans would be accomplished by replacing the water with oil.

Here’s Philippe Cousteau on it

“I could cut my leg off, I could cut my arm off, I could gouge my eye out, I’d still probably survive, but not very well,” Cousteau said. “And that’s what we’re doing to our oceans.”

Pointing to massive annual dead zones off the U.S. coast, Cousteau explained that our oceans are past their tipping point:

Heck of a job, Oprecious!

For added fun, use this map to compare the size of the spill to your home town. Here’s mine. Can you spot NYC?

Just as we didn’t know that the cleaning of the beeches in LA would be done by BP hired tmps for Obama’s photo ops

“The level of cleanup and cooperation we’ve gotten from BP in the past is in no way consistent to the effort shown on the island today,” Roberts said by telephone. “As soon as the president left, they were immediately put back on the buses and sent home.”

Reminds me of the good old days when Ceausescu was touring farmers’ markets and truckloads of  merchandise were preceding him, moving the same potatoes and carrots from market to market.

I always wondered then who was supposed to be fooled by this trick.

Later, I found out: not the Ceausescus, as later, when visiting Macy’s in New York she told him: “I bet they loaded all this just before we came”

More details from Obama’s Ceausescu moment

Roberts said that since oil started coming ashore in Grand Isle last week, no more than a dozen workers hired by BP have been seen on the beaches in the area, until Friday when the president arrived.”I’ve heard estimates of 300-500 people there today,” Roberts said. “They were given T-shirts and pants and handed a shovel and taken to the beach.”

“So, just to be clear, there are allegations this was just a dog and pony show for the president. So you’re saying this was nothing more than a sheer coincidence that the president shows up and all the workers come out in force on the same day?” asked WDSU I-Team reporter Travers Mackel.”Yes, absolutely a sheer coincidence,” said BP contractor Donald Nalty.

and yeah, it was BP putting on a show for Obama. Just like Macy’s.

Except here’s the ad for hiring those people, and it’s not from BP, it’s a local government page

Ashland Services, LLC needs 500 workers to assist with the oil spill cleanup in Grand Isle. Recruitment is taking place today, Thursday, May 27, 2010 only at 7528 Main Street (old unemployment office).

Workers will be paid $12.00 per hour and are expected to work 14 hour days 7 days a week. Transportation to Grand Isle, breakfast and lunch will be provided daily. All required safety gear will be provided by Ashland Services, LLC.

So, yeah, I’ll remember the moment the planet started bleeding to death when Obama authorized off-shore drilling.

I’ll akso remember how when he was grandstanding about suspending permits and six months moratoriums in the presser meant to show he cared about oil kill, they were lifting the ban on shallow water drilling. Check the date on that: it’s May 27.

Oh, and Malia, Daddy didn’t plug the hole just yet. But he’s certainly trying hard  to make it so we think he did.

Something happy for a change – in DC

Even WaPo covers it and look! They photographed the same couple as the Express

and, being WaPo, a fluff piece on Obama (stay calm)

Washington Times (yes, it earned its name) has an interesting piece about the media giving Obama a blank check on Iraq

The White House press corps hasn’t asked Mr. Obama about the Iraq war in months. The president was last asked about the conflict on Dec. 7, during an Oval Office press availability with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But the question came from a Turkish reporter – after an Associated Press reporter asked about the economy.

In fact, the last time a White House reporter asked about the Iraq war was June 26,

Obama’s Ronald Reagan Moment

a discussion started by one of the clear-minded ones offered me an I told you so (literally) moment –

You nailed it. When Obama praised Reagan, we all hoped he was just bullshitting.

The fact that he turned out to be serious is going to have disastrous consequences for this country.

14. When Obama praised Reagan, we all hoped he was just bullshitting.

I think many of us believed he meant he wanted to create a liberal version of the “Reagan Revolution” that would secure the Democratic party in power for a generation just like Reagan ended up securing his party in power for a generation.

We didnt think he meant literally copying the worst economic and social policies Reagan was responsible for.

of course, some of the blindness was caused by CDS – that made it OK to praise Raygun

7. Actually, I interpreted it as him slamming Clinton

I took it to mean “Reagan changed the course of this country in ways that the next president from a different party did not.” I didn’t put much thought into it, because I thought it was just another instance of primary candidates invoking other pols to make a point about themselves, like when Hillary said the thing about MLK needing LBJ to actually get anything done.

What I didn’t count on was what you said.

Finally someone remembers

23. Not “all” of us. Those who pointed at the red flag caught hell on DU, too.

The “I told you so” moment was so compelling, I actually posted there  – fist time in two years.

At the time I had a thread in “Best ten” about it. I see now it had been removed by B0bot Power. Fortunately my post is still in my diary made at a time when I didn’t even decide on which candidate I’d support (it was still Gravel for me) So this is the quote I posted there

So, to have now one of OUR candidates – whom some of us deemed fairly progressive – embrace those memes (“welfare state” “personal responsibilities” “failed liberals” – which Bush uses too, BTW) – feels like a knife in the back. I feel betrayed and saddened that there are DU-ers that don’t get it.

which led to more reminiscing

42. Yup.

Remember when all feminists were automatically white racists? Fun times, that.

The one discussion still there is the one where I declare my support for Hillary – based in part on the Reagan worship. I have one response to that aspect

54. People were morally dead during the Reagan era

and Obama wasn’t quite an adult when it began. I can’t really judge a candidate by their supporters, although Dean supporters seem to hang on forever (even now)

Somehow, B0bot missed the point that this was not about Reaganbots, but Reagan himself..
