Remember when W was considered the oilmen president?

And remember the headlines the Obama press plastered all over once Obama finally decided to address the spill?

Obama vows ‘relentless’ response to oil spill

There were even some pretty words about the way “forward” – not rescinding offshore drilling, mind you but

Obama: New oil leases will need safeguards

.I was then commenting that

the recent empty promise that future leases will be given under further scrutiny merely meant :no more preferential treatment? (knowing there were no scheduled future leases).

Boy, was I wrong! I was not counting on lying to our faces, and I should have known better after the “Obama vs insurers” and Obama vs banks” setups.

It appears that this empty promise was actually a bold lie as we look at the headline of Miami Herald (Saturday News dump)

Oil projects get a free pass

.and just to make clear, here’s the subtitle

The U.S. Interior Department has waived environmental studies for oil exploration plans since the spill in the Gulf.

WASHINGTON — Since the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig exploded April 20, the Obama administration has granted oil and gas companies at least 27 exemptions from doing in-depth environmental studies of oil exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico.

The waivers were granted despite President Barack Obama’s vow that his administration would launch a “relentless response effort” to stop the leak and prevent more damage to the Gulf. One of them was dated Friday — the day after Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he was temporarily halting offshore drilling.

It appears that it wasn’t just BP I mean MP’s employees that contributed to Obama&friends.

Others get to share in the winking and nodding too – but BP has lost no credibility either

The exemptions, known as “categorical exclusions,” were granted by the Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service, or MMS, and included waiving detailed environmental studies for a British Petroleum exploration plan to be conducted at a depth of more than 4,000 feet and an Anadarko Petroleum Corp. exploration plan at more 9,000 feet.

Apache Corp. said it was granted four exemptions for updating production equipment and drilling wells on existing sites and for drilling in the vicinity of an existing site.

Walter Oil & Gas, another Houston company, also received one for a survey of an existing site off the coast of Louisiana.

MMS justification?

MMS officials said the exemptions are continuing to be issued because they don’t represent final drilling approval.

oh, and also

“It’s not a rubber stamp,”

(so stop saying that)

The whistleblower on this mildly puts it

`It looks to me like they’re misleading the public,”

BP on the other hand, simply declined comment.

“Is there a moratorium on offshore drilling or not?” asked Peter Galvin, the conservation director at the Center for Biological Diversity, the environmental group that discovered the administration’s continued approval of the exemptions. “Possibly the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history has occurred, and nothing appears to have changed.”

By way of comment, Miami Herald offers us the opinion of a UC professor

“That’s related to the fact that oil companies have a great deal of power over MMS and there hasn’t been much oversight,” she said.

which is a very mild mannered way of saying:

“they are in the pockets of the oil companies”. On a Saturday. In a local paper.

AP has a piece today trying to explain away the 11 days non-response to the disaster

Obama oil response: aggressive as crisis unfolded

The hillarious ending

Was the president mindful of some people wanting to make comparisons to the Bush administration’s Katrina response?

Other than geography, Gibbs insists there is no connection: “We’ve done everything that we could.”

.and the antidote to AP

The Cover-up: BP’s Crude Politics and the Looming Environmental Mega-Disaster

Only after the magnitude of the disaster became evident did Obama order Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to declare the oil disaster a “national security issue.” Although the Coast Guard and FEMA are part of her department, Napolitano’s actual reasoning for invoking national security was to block media coverage of the immensity of the disaster that is unfolding for the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean and their coastlines.

The Obama administration also conspired with BP to fudge the extent of the oil leak, according to our federal and state sources. After the oil rig exploded and sank, the government stated that 42,000 gallons per day was gushing from the seabed chasm.  Five days later, the federal government upped the leakage to 210,000 gallons a day.

The cover of the day goes to AM-NY for capturing the essence of what went on – and without the “S” word too

Tabloids are taking from the SG senate hearing the “shitty deals” Carl Levin used from their e-mails. It makes for some colorful headlines.

Here’s Metro’s version

.while NY Post seems to blame Senate for the language in GS’s e-mails

By comparison, WaPo seems to defend GS

not so Washington Times

.The Wall Street Journal sees it a secondary headline after Greece
