WASHINGTON – APRIL 27: U.S. President Barack Obama (4th L) speaks as he greets members of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, including co-chairs Erskine Bowles (3rd L) and Alan Simpson (5th L), in the Roosevelt Room at the White House April 27, 2010 in.
Oprecious who is even these days compared to FDR set up this abomination by executive order.
Its recommendations are supposed to be voted by this lame congress – AFTER the elections,
FDL has learned that in a last minute move, Nancy Pelosi sneaked language into the rule that the House is voting on tonight regarding war funding.
Embedded in the rule is the requirement that the House will vote on the deficit commission’s recommendations in the lame duck session if they pass the Senate.
It’s been called a Suicide pact by B0bots who still don’t understand why
President Obama risks endangering his own future and his party’s in pursuit of a misguided policy goal.
And James Gailbraith provides testimony to the commission about why this thing shouldn’t even exist. It’s required reading for everyone
He calls in the legitimacy of a secret commission, bankrolled by a foe of Social security.
first, that your discussions are at a level of discourse so low that you feel it would be embarrassing to disclose them. Second, that some members of the commission are proceeding from fixed, predetermined agendas. Third, that the purpose of the secrecy is to defer public discussion of cuts in Social Security and Medicare until after the 2010
He calls Simpson’s ability to lead the commission
But Senator Simpson has plainly shown that he lacks the temperament to do a fair and impartial job on this commission. This is very clear from the abusive response he made recently to Alex Lawson of Social Security Works, who was asking important questions about the substance of the commission’s work, as well as calling attention to the illegitimate secrecy under which you are operating.
Before this display of ignorance
he called retired Americans “greedy geezers” because they don’t want their Social Security payments used to fund extravagant tax cuts and military spending.
Please note in the video how he says that the life expectancy used to be 57 and that’s why they set retirement age at 65. Also, those IOUs he mentions, are the violations of the “lock box” by the government which dipped in OUR money to pay for wars and tax cuts to the rich.
Galbraith statement also explores the economic reasons the catfood commission is nonsense – as it’s stacked with politicians and only 2 economists.
And as the public at large has no idea what’s going on, here they go in the darkness to seal our fate
WASHINGTON – APRIL 27: U.S. President Barack Obama (C), and co-chairs of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform Erskine Bowles (L) and Alan Simpson (R), leave the Rose Garden after remarks by Obama April 27, 2010 in Washington, DC. Obama thanked members of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform for their service and spoke on the ‘importance of forging bipartisan consensus around recommendations to meaningfully improve our long-run fiscal health.’
Please, spread this information around before it’s too late.
This was the cutest headline I could find on a holiday weekend – from Florida – yes, we’re trapped in a bad movie
The headlines from Alabama seem to all have the word “glum” in them
and another one
In LA, no holiday from cleanup
and an oily forecast from Mississippi
For a change of topics, a darkened job picture
or more entertaining – NY Post takes on I-Phone
But since this is the independence weekend I saved one nice cover for the end: a smile from rescued turtles
as a reminder that good people can still make a difference, even in an ocean of greed and corruption.
