Obama’s speech in the Oval Office was planned to..change the subject

Senior administration officials said Obama’s address — which they described as coming at an “inflection point” in the crisis — will help adjust the nation’s focus from the immediate spill to a longer-term strategy for restoring the gulf region and changing the way the country uses energy. Obama said he has assigned Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, a former Mississippi governor, to draw up a long-term strategy for the gulf “as soon as possible.”

Privately, one senior official said the speech was a direct effort to “wipe the slate clean,” adding that the goal now is to “shift the conversation to something more future-oriented.”

Did it? I will look at some live blogs, discussions for the immediate reactions – this will be a “best of”

8. Our faith in God will sustain us.

:silly:
It turns out, by the way, that oil rigs today generally don’t cause spills. They are technologically very advanced.

21. Well… Remember What Happened To Jesus Today
And BP too, for that matter.

Of course, the funniest posts there were from those trying to praise teh speech.

Like this one

The President gets an A+ (updated)

for hitting the right notes:

bullet points about those notes follow, along with very extensive quotes from the speech

As the first bullet point was “expressing compassion” other flunkie takes it from there

He’s gets an A++ from me..

The Compassion level was off the charts..he feels it so it’s easy to convey.
Permalin

And the preemptive defense

No matter what the president says tonight, the opposition is already lined up to take apart anything

he will do.

.The Orange Cheeto

An editoril praising the vagueness of the speech is met with a few good comments

heads in the sand (0+ / 0-)

IndianaDem – I have sadly concluded since the spill began that DailyKos is more and more becoming a Potemkin Village for those who can’t see that Obama has dropped the ball like in a major way.

and this speech tonight did nothing.

A flowery speech about alternative energy and oil lobbyists just doesn’t cut it.

We are talking about destabilizing an entire economy and all the socio-economic downturn that ensue.  Offering unemployment checks and talking about some Wind Turbine Factory in Indiana or whereever it was isn’t plugging the well and isn’t keeping Gulf Coast labor employed and feeding their families.

There was ZERO aggressive plan of action and urgency that we need happening out there right now.

Well the first four minutes of the Presidents speach was bragging about how great the people in His administration did on the response to the accident and spill.

When the first drop of oil hit the shore it showed that their response failed.

He just can’t help telling us how great He and all His people are, all while the Gulf is feeling the results of their fuck ups.

He needs to fire Thad Allen, Dr. Chu, Ken Salazar, Janet Napolitano, shortly before He resigns.

Usually I come away from an Obama speech feeling that “hope” that some “change” will occur. That Obama “gets it” (so I should “Chill the fuck out”) and that shit will get real.

Not this time.

This was a terrible damn speech, and I feel nothing but empty dissatisfaction.

I have no idea what he was actually trying to say.

I’ve never had trouble understanding Barack Obama, unlike George Dubya who spoke in Stupid so well that I misunderestimated my ability to recognize what was being said.

‘Bama has me stumped and disenchanted.

Grade = D

Last time Obama graded himself he was a B+. I wonder where does he think he is now…

Well, he did change the subject, but not the way he wanted.

he wanted people to say: OK, you were an idiot, but now we trust you” – the way media made them do with W after HIS 9.11 speech.

The problem is – your disaster is ongoing. So, the media can’t help much.

NY Daily News wrote an article more forceful than the speech but the comments are:

Mr. president, the 3am call is ringing – please wake up and stop the leak, forget trying to save the drill site. STOP THE GUSHING OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t even stand to look at the pictures of birds , turtles, crabs, fish much less the poor people. PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama is on his way out.

In fact even the toadies at MSNBC threw up their hands

Olbermann: “It was a great speech if you were on another planet for the last 57 days.”

But B0bots are fighting back

Matthews/Olbermann getting bashed for their analysis on local

call-in shows this morning. The one show is my local call-in, the other is Bill Press’s show. “With friends like them, Obama doesn’t need enemies.” HA!

Ha-ha-ha! One question though: why were they supposed to be “friends” again?

Seems B0bots in their quest for loyalty forgot about the appearances of the Fourth Estate and all that. But they are under siege.

So, I’ll close my selection with one from B0botland’s Queen of the Damned herself

0. Yep. No room for prayer. No room for anything but gloom, doom and dispair…..
the President is a Christian, and most of those on the Gulf watching their lives be changed forever are too. It was the last part of his speech, and it was based on conversations he’s had with those on the Gulf. But I guess that freedom of religion means that one is not allowed to bring up Faith and prayer in a speech, and that this is seen as a crime. Guess that’s what being liberal means, hey? Prayer haters. Is that really better than the other side? Good to know that Prayers are not allowed in the case of a fucking disaster that is yet to be over!

.So, to answer my own question: did he change the subject? I’d say, for some of the listeners, but not the way he tried.

After hearing the  “we are great and we’ll do whatever you think we need to do to keep being great” speech, I bet many who kept their resentment trained on BP are noticing the other culprit.

In my searches for comments I found surprisingly little swooning from the operatives & enthusiasts.

One in Bobotland answering to the comment from one of them that this was not the best but not the worst speech either, asked

Pray, tell. Which was his worst speech, then, if not this one?

.Can you imagine if he pulls another Chicago Olympics feat with BP today?
