It was refreshing to read this morning that
.because of the controversy created by his remarks over Afghanistan:
“A country of our size, with its focus on exports and thus reliance on foreign trade, must be aware that … military deployments are necessary in an emergency to protect our interests — for example when it comes to trade routes, for example when it comes to preventing regional instabilities that could negatively influence our trade, jobs and incomes,” Köhler said.
I am sure many American readers wonder what was so wrong with this. Germans, thankfully, still remember. It was Hitler who assumed he was entitled to other countries resources. (living space)
Of course, in the criticism, Hitler is not mentioned, but US’s superior propaganda is praised
Even during the Iraq War, the economic backdrop of the invasion — sold by President George W. Bush as a freedom offensive — was hardly discussed, even though access to oil was certainly a motivation. Afghanistan does not possess such raw materials, but securing trade routes can certainly serve hegemony in the region.
the justification of war by economic needs by Hitler. And it makes them uncomfortable. At least the public declaration of such reasons.
I wish such a discomfort would exist in this country too. About war. About messing up the ocean. And more.
Koehler had tears in his eyes and resigned.
This guy however wants his life back
and this guy campaigned on not voting for the war in Iraq and promised to slow the rise of the oceans.
No tears, no resignations.
