So the post-partisanship pony took a big dump

Obama himself told an Illinois newspaper that Gregg’s withdrawal was “something of a surprise”

Sacrificing family planing to make the pony happy looks smarter and smarter now.

But who cares? They have a stimulus to parade now…Here’s the Mishun Accomplished tour:

East Peoria, Ill. – President Obama’s visit to the headquarters of the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment Thursday turned out to be a premature victory lap on the economic stimulus package, coming just one day after Congress agreed on a $789 billion compromise.

From the bestest speech on stimulus:

“If Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off,” Obama said, citing a promise from Caterpillar’s CEO that he would rehire workers who lost their jobs after the stimulus plan passes.

It was a stirring moment, too bad that later that afternoon

Caterpillar CEO Jim Owens said he did not, in fact, think that the stimulus plan would stop more layoffs at Caterpillar or spark new hiring.

“The truth is we’re going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again,” Owens said, according to ABC news, adding that “it is going to take some time” before their stimulus bill would fuel new jobs at his company.

All that photo op wasted

The comments came after an afternoon in which Obama visited the plant and, flanked by the Caterpillar’s signature yellow tractors bearing the unmistakable CAT label, declared he was confident the stimulus would bring new hiring to the company.

As they say in Hollywood: it doesn’t play in Peoria….
