Having ditched single payer and public option, Obama continues his apology tour to the right, this time to the faith leaders, making sure there are no hard feelings on that side. Burried in a 2 pages article there is this interesting sentence:
Obama also insisted the plan would not provide government funding for abortion.
Oh, and while at it, no stinkin’ immigrants either (refered to as “individuals”).
Interestingly enough, in Anne Kornbluth’s corresponding article in WaPo funding for abortion is not mentioned
but knowing what he said, the headline becomes more interesting
“On Faith Call, Obama Seeks to Refute ‘Ludicrous’ Claims About Health Reform”
Indeed – cover abortions – preposterous!
Thinking back to the primaries, Hillary had a plan, cheatin’ John had a plan, Obama had a “me too” patchwork.
Not unlike in 2000 Gore would talk about preserving Social Security and Bush would have a stump speech about “we love Social Security and our seniors” (no word of privatization)
Not unlike in 2004, when Wesley Clark would have a speech about ending the war in Iraq through regional diplomacy and Bush would schedule a speech on Iraq the same day – repeating the old empty slogans but sucking all the air time from the new ideas.
It’s how Obama sucked the air out of all possible reform, beginning with the campaign, and continuing now – with his tour from center right to extreme right.
Move away, ladies, we’re on our way to postpartisanship. Or how the poor B0bots still try to see it – multidimensional chess. On Pluto.
I had a painful deja vu of last year Bros before Hos primary reading about the Millbank/Cilliza embarrassment.
This morning I read the comments at TPM and I felt like I was in a parallel universe: suddenly everyone was properly shocked and Millbank’s anti-progressive sins since the Bush days were brought up. It was pleasant, if eerie…
Until finally someone pushed the reality button
So calling Hillary a bitch is wrong again? Good to know. So hard to stay current on the ethics of progressives nowadays.
Of course two attacks – one on PUMA, another on reality itself, followed in short order.
So, a little memory refresher:
One more recent, straight to the source
And from back then, those forgotten times, here’s a collection from “progressives” – not Millbank and co. but the people who are “shocked” today. Especially this snapshot of “Best of…Democratic Underground
So, not exactly strawmen. And no, you can’t match this no matter how much you scour the other side.
because, in your case, it came straight from the campaign..
On the misogyny front, even as Letterman gets to deliver a real apology (an advertiser left CBS), Bill Maher jumps into the fray adding his very special brand of patronizing of women that endeared him to boys of all ages for so many years
In defending his friend, Maher thought Republicans had over reacted and this was just a case of ‘fake’ outrage. Much ado about nothing. He then went on talking about how Letterman had invited Sarah Palin and her young daughter, Willow, to appear as guests on his show but the Governor declined because she thought it would be wise to keep her daughter away from him. Said Maher, “…that’s right, he’s 62 years old, he’s gonna fuck her right there on stage…it would be very wise to keep her, very wise, yes. You know, I’d worry a little more about the 18-year old hockey players who knock up your daughters.”
Oh, Bill, just as you woke up a bit from your koolaid stupor over the Misogynist in Chief, you had to remind us why as you say in that piece are “still a fan”
So, according to TV Guide a protest is being organized against Letterman today
Leahy, who also helped organize the anti-tax “tea parties” in cities across the country earlier this year, estimated anywhere from 50 to 300 people would attend a protest planned outside Letterman’s studio in New York City on Tuesday.
What about Maher? Will “it’s not TV, it’s HBO” thingy protect him?
And as Breibart remarks
According to Bill Maher, these jokes are ‘harmless.’ Women of NOW are you listening?
The other healthy dose of irony today comes from the story of Obama’s hemming and hawing over how to react to Iran’s stolen election. Politico informs us about Obama’s hand being forced (such a leader, that one!)
Echoing the words of the Brookings Institute guy, Obama mostly adopted a Greta Garbo stance
“We respect Iranian sovereignty and want to avoid the United States being the issue inside of Iran,” he said.
I can see why a president installed via dubious vote count finds the subject uncomfortable.
But I bet you won’t guess who else is suddenly outraged about election theft
One particularly funny turn is the GOP’s righteous indignation
“The administration’s silence in the face of Iran’s brutal suppression of democratic rights represents a step backwards for homegrown democracy in the Middle East,” said House GOP whip Eric Cantor of Virginia.
And they said it well, to be sure, covering the kids aspect, the way Chelsea Clinton was treated, how political sides are no excuse for demeaning of women. They even said
Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men.
Which is wonderful – and very, very, very late.
Where were you when they were calling Hillary names? I only remember the post-portem
“NOW’s president, Kim Gandy, said her members would remain alert: “We’re going to keep watching because we think Michelle Obama will be the recipient of the same kind of attacks that Hillary was.”
Thank God you remained vigilent on Michelle while declaring Palin was not a woman
Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major party ticket, but she is not the right woman.
So, you may imagine why Dave got a bit confused about all the mixed messages. Maybe he understood from you and all the other “feminists” that Palin was a dude, therefore offense-proof. Maybe he thought that now a days , that’s what a feminist looks like
and not them objects with skirts and slutty looks…
That being said, we hope that you’ll be able to stay awake long enough to see sexism and misogyny even when coming from Teh One.
I am still waiting for your reaction on his defense of the women’s right to wear a hijab?
Or the one about Obama not asking Sotomayor about her position on choice rights?
It would be nice if NOW could actually respond to events as they happen – not a week later – as in this case. (NOW, not later)
Still, your taking on Letterman was the bravest thing you did in a long, long time.
Let’s see you actually speaking truth to power next time, and maybe your credibility may start being restored.
Or better yet, as the Reclusive Leftist recommends, change their leadership
Letterman responds to the Palin joke outrage: it was the older daughter I fantasized being raped, not the younger one. Now you’ll come on my show?
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter, the 18-year-old girl, who is – her name is Bristol, that’s right, and so, then, now they’re upset with me…”
“These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter.
Except as, few noticed, as the 14 years old news was all over the internet, he made another joke about the daughter who visited NYC
Letterman followed up on the line Tuesday night, joking that “the toughest part of her visit was keeping [former New York Gov.] Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.”
And on the subject of hatred and Freudian slips, it’s worth mentioning Obama’s mentor revealing his colors by identifying the generic fallback culprits: the Jews
Asked if he had spoken to the president, Wright said: “Them Jews aren’t going to let him talk to me.
Wright also said Obama should have sent a U.S. delegation to the World Conference on Racism held recently in Geneva, Switzerland, but that the president did not do so for fear of offending Jews and Israel.
“Ethnic cleansing is going on in Gaza. Ethnic cleansing (by) the Zionist is a sin and a crime against humanity, and they don’t want Barack talking like that because that’s anti-Israel,”
The good mentor needs to brush up on the meaning of “ethnic cleansing”
Finally, NOW woke up from the contemplation of the male feminist in the White house and said something
The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men.
Not bad, but when I recall them joining the wolves during the campaign, smacks of hypocrisy. just a bit. Still, nice they noticed.
