***IRONY ALERT****
There. I said it. Now I feel free to say anything I want. As a white Democrat voting for Hillary how else can I defend my lack of reverence for Obama?
A candidate who, I might add, famously said he was “not that invested in the fights of the 60s and the 70s” and endorses Reagan’s views about the “excesses of the 60’s” – which are both code words for the civil rights fights.
I need to come clean, especially as the word is being tossed around so much right now
I have been called racist so many times in the past few months that I may have to accept it – and proceed from the assumption that I have nothing to lose at this point so, I might just speak freely.
/****Irony alert****
No, I don’t have anything against people of other races – in fact I will very likely vote for Cynthia McKinney this November.
Still, 2 days ago, I was called racist for carrying a sign that said ” SELECTED NOT ELECTED – PUMA” and “ROE, FISA, ANTI-WAR – UNDER THE BUS- PUMA”
How racist am I?
Let me count the ways:
Before I didn’t even know of it, Obama called me racist in his book, talking about “White Folks Greed”
(he gives it a dramatic reading at the link)
During the primaries, Michelle Obama called me racist in this speech when she said:
“We don’t like being pushed outside of our comfort zones. You know it right here on this campus. You know people sitting at different tables- you all living in different dorms. I was there. You’re not talking to each other, taking advantage that you’re in this diverse community. Because sometimes it’s easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions. It makes you feel justified in your own ignorance… That’s America. So the challenge for us is are we ready for change?”
She may have used “we” but I know she didn’t mean herself but just me. But she gave me also the key to the euphemism the Obamas use for racists these days “afraid of those not like them“. Useful, because later, B0 will use it in two very publicized unguarded statements- where Obama calls me racist – and the media will go out of their way to ignore this fact:
1. First – the event remembered as throw grandma under the bus – but everyone – opponents included – glossed over the premise the “typical” white person is a reflexive racist.
In the “bestest speech on race ever” he tells us of his grandmother’s fear of black men on the street (again that fear Michelle instructed us about). In the clarification to the bestest speech on race ever he calls us all white people racist
again, using the same euphemism.
The other time Obama called me racist was
in the much publicized “bitter statement” -
also public – made to a friendly audience in an effort to make them feel superior to those not voting for B0. I call it bitter statement because everyone latched on that word, the guns and bibles too, but gingerly stepped over the worst:
And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Now – since we know what “fear of those different” means – it’s easy to understand that “antipathy to people who are not like them” is a step further – he is calling white democrats voting for Hillary rabid racists.
I know Obama presumes everyone has to worship him – and any deviation from this rule implies something sinister – “fear or antipathy” of those who don’t look like them.
Presumption noted. I will not defend myself.
Is McCain’s ad going to rally the racists to vote against Obama? Yes.
It’s going to be the real, died in the wool racists. And then there’s going to be me. Because much as I said at the start that I will relax about it, I am seething angry at the insult. Maybe even angry enough to pay back by voting with the other racists. Because McCain ad – however maligned it may became – legitimized me too, along with the Clintons, McCain, Apalachians, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania voters and Obama’s grandmother.
Because if racism is fear of those different than you, I do fear you, Barack Obama. I even have antipathy for you. You don’t look like me.
From where I sit you look very much like George Bush.
Update of October 19, 2009
And now, we know for a fact that the race memo against the Clintons – was part of a deliberate and controlled manipulation of the media as admitted now by Anita Dunn
President Obama’s presidential campaign focused on “making” the news media cover certain issues while rarely communicating anything to the press unless it was “controlled,”
“”Very rarely did we communicate
through the press anything that we didn’t absolutely control,”

I don’t think you are racist but definetly think you have taken things out of context.
1. Lets look at your first link to youtube. That audio is Obama giving a speech about Reverend Wright. In that speech he specifically is PREFACING what Wright says ,then condems it.
2. Michelle Obama is talking about her misconceptions and stereotypes by humans in general including her OWN.
.. I’d go on but I realize you aren’t going to change your mind. All I’ve got to say is, if you can’t be honest with yourself, (ie. posting things that people know to be untrue) then how can you be honest with anyone.
I’m sure you aren’t a racist, but it doesn’t matter. When it comes to Obama, you are just as bad.

Yeah, would you like some crackers to go with that whine? Even if I hadn’t encountered overt racism by proud PUMA’s, your sensitive offense indicates that you took this all a bit too personally. A garment was laid out and you decided it was cut to your fit.

Hi,
I feel a great need to contact you and I do this with the utmost of respect for your positions. I am not a democrat, in fact, not only am I republican but I am mostly conservative in my leanings. Under different circumstances we would not be talking at all but as they say “Politics makes strange bedfellows”.
I have always thought that Hillary on the ticket would be the winning solution for the dems. Although, I do not agree with her positions (for the most part) she is, in my humble opinion, the most tenacious, determined and toughest fighter that your party has seen for a long long time. Before the presidential race began in earnest I respected and admired the political machine she had built and thought that the nomination was hers to lose. Through inside party manipulations she was cast aside and I thought that was incredibly devious and evil of the apparent king (queen) makers named Pelosi, Reid et al.
I’m not completely sure why I am writing you here but I see two powerful forces (The PUMA folks and the republican party) usually opposed but now joined by a common unifying theme. Could this possibly be a way of unification for our two very diverse groups? Imagine the power our combined forces could have. We could also short circuit Obamas pure bullshit argument about transforming politics. All I can tell you is that I am sincere and I am respectfully writing you about my thoughts. Please tell me your thoughts and remember we can take small steps on those things we agree on and just see what happens.
Respectfully,

Rich , you and edgeoforever are both on the right track.
I was a Democrat for over 30 years and am now registered as an Independent. I hope to go back to the Democratic Party if it is ever cleansed of the likes of Dean, Brazile, Pelosi, Reid, etc. Most of my family and friends have taken the same view that I have.
Edgeoforever, I have read your postings on NQ quite often, and find you to be a very sensible and truthtelling person.

Kudos! I have no doubt that “die in the wool” racists will vote for McCain, but thanks to BO, his supporters and the Democratic Party, so will I. Anyone who is not intimidated by them, in fear of them, or in favor of them is a racist and/or Uncle Tom. So since I’m African American and they can’t call me an Uncle Tom, they will refer to me in the latter. I can live with it. The betrayal of the Democratic Party was not be left to die. They must pay the price for their use of reverse racism on the Clintons and anyone else who stood up to them. A price must be exacted for their sins.

To all who have responded, I thank you. I believe, whatever the reasons, we have to get rid of the dem party decision makers (Reid, Pelosi, Dean, Brazile et al.). But what happens after that? I propose we do not let this confluence of ideas go to waste. Why can’t WE, the people, come together and make politics transformative on OUR own. If we all recognize that we disagree on various things but we are in full agreement on this issue, lets start with what we do agree on. Then lets move, issue by issue and see what we can work out. It could work if we make it work. Is this possible or am I just blowing smoke? Let me know your thoughts.

I really loved this comment, because it exactly represents what you are talking about:
In other words: I’m sure you’re not a racist, but that just proves you’re a racist.

When my mayor, Michael Nutter supported Hillary Clinton, he was called a traitor, a happy negro and an uncle Tom etc., etc.. Now Barak Obama and Joe Biden are outraged that Sarah Palin would raise important questions about BO’s relationship with Bill Ayers. That is some how race baiting? Where was your out-rage Joe, when the DNC, MSNBC, CNN the New York Times and News Week declaired Shari-ah law on Hillary Clinton? John McCain stood up and denounced Rev. MACMURPHY STOP TEACHING CHILDREN THAT BLACK PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS WHITE PEOPLE

‘macmurphy’, sadly I’m shocked to say that I can’t believe you actually have access to the internet, and still hold your antiquated beliefs.
I believe you’re a sincere person, but what are your thoughts on obama’s racebaiting of two find Dems, Bill and Hillary?
1)Media twists their comments
http://mediamatters.org/items/200801130004
2)uhbama fails to lead by example and denounce and correct the record:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/12/obama-camps-memo-on-clin_n_81205.html
3)uhbama’s surrogates are racebaiting at the highest level:
“New York State Senator Bill Perkins used quite explicit racial stereotyping in a speech aimed at discouraging his constituents from voting for Clinton by saying, Harlem “is not Bill Clinton’s backyard or his plantation. Underscore, plantation.” Feb 2008
4)dailykos kiddies are racebaiting along with uhbama:
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/did_clinton_darken_obamas_skin.html
5)A black blogger addresses the further racebaiting in South Carolina by uhbama:
Jamal spoke of this, Sean Wilentz spoke of it. If Obama didn’t want to be compared to Jesse Jackson, maybe he shouldn’t have put R&B in his SC advertisements, shouldn’t have sent black-only emissaries to the Black SC community, and should have put Wright, who was doing the rounds, on pause. The message in South Carolina put out by Obama’s campaign, whether the media wanted to ignore it or not, was “Vote for me I am Black.” To then come back and smash Bill Clinton for mentioning Jesse Jackson, that’s audacity; Axelrod made this clear through his surrogates, while he had Obama say that what the Clintons’ said was “unfortunate.”
6)Here’s uhbama ‘regretting’ his campaign’s racebaiting when called on it by Russert:
RACEBAITING IS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW!
Macmurphy, where the fuck have you been for the past year, not paying attention or believing every word MSNBC and CNN are spewing at you?

Twisted Logic Celebration
Posted on November 12, 2008 by freemenow | Edit
Dedicated to Gerri, Hillary and Sarah
Tears were shed in the streets, throngs celebrating in Times Square could be heard from 1st. Ave., the media was in a frenzy, Obots were in heaven, black leaders were lined up to tell us how proud they finally were of America (Michelle was thinking it to herself no doubt) and headlines read “History” was made on Nov. 4th 2008 in America because a black was elected to the White House. I was in tears too but I scratched my head and asked what the hell is so historic about placing yet another man in office?
Hold your celebrations folks. We are not there yet- history was not made – we did not overcome- and Martin Luther King’s dream was not realized. Wasn’t it King who said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”? Weren’t some of those little children daughters?
So now all of a sudden skin color became the factor that everyone is judging how we make history? Was it because his face was black and for a short blip in our history blacks were kept as slaves? Or maybe some would say we are celebrating a black man reminds us of slavery and somehow this partially black man with no slavery background transcends that dark part of our history? Well that may be quite a stretch but we are still not there yet!
Women’s slavery has yet to be resolved – it is not a blip in history — it is a fact of a life for woman, and it’s been going on since the beginning of time. Women have been ignored, blamed, talked down to, laughed at, held back, paid less, worked harder, kept down, smacked around, humiliated, degraded , victimized, beaten, raped and are murdered at the hands of men — their own husbands and fathers and are still daily victims right now.
This so-called historic Black candidate was not a product of the civil rights abuses of this country; he did not suffer mistreatment by during his candidacy as did both the female candidates. So I ask again what was so euphoric that millions were crying – some for joy and some from the release resulting of shedding their white guilt. Guilt they willingly accepted as their responsibility and obligated the rest of us to carry with along with them while they turned a blind eye to those of us who have been enslaved since the beginning of time and who were left behind yet again.
No- I maintain as do up to one half on this nations citizenry who is taxed yet not fully represented, history will not be made until every enslaved, mistreated or otherwise unrepresented citizen is equally represented, until Jeremiah Wright does not call anyone a nigger, until no women is ever again called a cunt, until women support other women whether they fully agree on every issue or not and until a woman is elected as president of the United States of America.
Then let there be dancing in the streets and celebrations in every home and tears of joy to celebrate a truly historic accomplishment to be proud of. In stead you stand there with tears in your eyes as if you accomplished some great feat you damned so-called civil rights leader hypocrites! Civil rights include human rights!
I sent the above letter to Donna Brazile today after I got her letter shown in part below.
“You tore down walls and revealed a brand new America. We danced in the streets and cried tears of sheer joy, all because you hoped and worked and gave everything you had.
You have already won an amazing and transformative victory with all of your time, money, and extraordinary hard work.
But Barack Obama will need every last vote in the Senate to bring this country desperately needs. It’s up to us to give him everything necessary for a new beginning.”
Sincerely,
Donna Brazile

Hi!
Just found your blog and I am going to bookmark it. For the record, you are not taking this out of hand- things are happening just as you say. You are not having an overactive imagination here! The media, blacks, and some whites want all white people to bow down and believe that we are all racists due to things that happened hundreds of years ago. I supported McCain due to the fact that I just personally think BO is full of it and I was racist for that. It’s a shame what is going on. And you are right- most media wants to ignore it or make you think that you are taking things out of context. I wonder what will have to happen for it to turn itself back around???

But in a way, you gotta hand it to blacks. By voting for another black – as a bloc, en masse, without question – they got what they wanted.
Imagine what would happen if women stuck together like that. Personally, now that I’m no longer a Democrat? I’m voting for whichever woman is on the ballot, regardless of party. I’m sick of seeing men screwing things up.

“But in a way, you gotta hand it to blacks. By voting for another black – as a bloc, en masse, without question – they got what they wanted.”
So, it was okay for black voters to overwhelmingly support Bill Clinton, Kerry, and Gore, but suddenly black voters are sheep for voting to overwhelmingly support Barack Obama? Give me a break.
From what I can see, PUMAs are the ones who place personalities before principles and party loyalty. Yet, incredibly, PUMAs are the ones with the audacity to accuse others of being blind followers. Talk about irony.

Shame on anyone for accusing you of racism if it be simply because you have legitimate reasons to not vote for someone who happens to be of a different race than you. If that is the criteria you would belong to a huge club.
Look. Elections come and go, so do presidents. Even the one that was selected by the Supreme court lasted 8 years but did leave. So will the current one who did win by 7 percentage points (I think the day was convincing enough to be acceptable). Also, Barack is but ONE man and a mixed one too. But I will not focus on this election becacuse racism is a word prior to and extending beyond it.
Now in one man’s name (which you proceed to permanently mispell or call names and those you complain about do not even go as far as you in their hate and disrespect for those you support) and his campaign’s actions, and the press’s action (funny how you hold candidates responsible for what the press do and even unconnected supporters all around the country and muddle everything up into one giant feeling of being wronged and ascribe it all to ONE – that one), you trivialize the word racism.
Someone said up there that “and for a short blip in our history blacks were kept as slaves”. Yes 400 actual years from 1400s till the 1800s. (If I am correct, you are not accusing the said candidate of racism against your candidate for what he actually said but for not defending your ccandidate when his ‘supporters’ made racially charged acusations – compare this to your action on an actual falsehood let slide above). Children and adults alike were taken away from faraway lands and parents, some mutilated, and put to work without wages, were sold as properties and denied their humanity. And in the name of ONE man, and one campaign, you think those folks, the actions against them, and those who still actually proclaim themselves racists and wish to continue those crimes, all deserve to be hurt or validated by your trivializing this word.
Maybe you are reacting. Maybe you didnt start it. However, if you choose to jump into the mud beause mud was flung at you by folks in mud, what do you become? The fact that you think the word can be trivialized because of one man or one election, or one president is equally as troubling. If someone accuses me of anti-semitism for instance because I recognize and sympathize with children who are hurt in the defense of it, then I go further to label myself same or call myself a holocaust smpathizer, have I not trivialized the actual 6 million real people who died? The fact that I do not know better, does this not mean I actually think those events are light and does that not make my thinking and actions of similar effect as those who actually qualify? The line begins to blur. Get out of the mud and focus on getting your message and objective out positively and with integrity and honor and your purpose will stand the test of time.

He has a comment, each time race is an aspect of something served up by the media, even if he is commenting as a troubled black man who happens to be President of the United States.
