NY Metro cover observes that Oscar showing off is unseeming in the current crisis

(unlike say, the 170 million Inauguration?)
whole NYT and NY Post apologize
NY Times has to publish this statement as directed by the settlement with McCain
The suit alleged that the published article communicated by carefully drawn implication that Ms. Iseman and Senator John McCain had an illicit romantic relationship in 1999.
When originally published in the midst of a hard fought presidential campaign, the article triggered an avalanche of criticism from readers, public commentators, and even The New York Times’ Public Editor.
And it was part of NY Times non-itemized contribution to the Obama campaign. And no, it was not a typo calling NY Times a tabloid.
The other, more obvious tabloid, NY Post is doing a GOP style apology for a cartoon that fed into the “Ma. they’re racist” hysteria that this election generated. I have no love for the Murdoch rag, but a second wave of rage over a cartoon is a bit over the top. Anyway, here’s Murdoch’s spiel
But it has been taken as something else – as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.
This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.
And then starts lashing at the protesters
However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past – and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.
To them, no apology is due.
Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon – even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.
Me, I am with myiq2xu on this
But I would like to point out that President Obama didn’t write the stimulus bill nor is he perceived to have done so. The authors of the stimulus bill are generally perceived to have been Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, so I don’t know if you can truthfully argue that the cartoon is a clear reference to Obama.
I suppose cartoonists and satirists better say good night now

…Update
here’s a so called “joke” that turned into a fake story – kudos to both TPM and Huffpo for buying into “Fox anchor calls Holder a monkey” – let’s see how many we can browbeat with racism accusations – may I remind everyone that the ones used durin the campaign were also false

I don’t watch the Oscars anymore because I seldom go to the movies. But a lot of people get some appreciated distraction from their problems both from the show and the movies being honored.
Which can’t be said about the very un-entertaining bonuses the financial industry handed itself on the taxpayers’ dime.
As for the chimp cartoon, I saw it as a well-deserved, funntysmack at Congress. Yet I knew how it was going to be taken.
Too bad Sharpton doesn’t organize the same kinds of protests against bad policy like TARP that actually affects people’s lives. Not as many headlines for him there, I guess. And it might cut into his donor base.

I can see how someone could find the cartoon offensive and racist, but I don’t think you can say that there is no other interpretation or that it was clearly intended to have a racist meaning.

Regarding the cartoon, which hypersensitive ambulance chaser types like Al Sharpton find offensive because of some perceived racist implication that the chimp was supposed to represent Barack Obama as the author of the stimulus bill, let us be aware that not only did Barry not write the stimulus bill, he didn’t even READ it.

……
Murphy should add that contribution to those not reported. Mc Cain really got a raw deal and so did this lady and the media was drooling at the time.
They never apologized for the hatchet job they did on Cindy Mc Cain…still waiting…

Ailing Sen. Ted Kennedy may not return to the Senate, and speculation is brewing that the veteran Democratic lawmaker is setting up his wife, Vicki, to succeed him, according to a report Friday in the Boston Herald.

I say, when did we succeed and become a monarchy in states with Kennedys?

One of oslima’s picks just called us cowards about race. Is that a green light to create cartoons about this Arab/American president? He certainly is not handsome, he stutters and fills his words with “uhs” when speaking extemporaneously, and he bobs his head while walking. He will be the vacation king of presidents on top of working out to preserve his “physique” every day for 2 hours. His transparency is nil, given a non birth certificate and no records from college days. He is already a joke, and the joke is on all of us.
