The tabloids had a field day with Obama’s damage control tour.
The Daily News cover has an intriguing context

While the Post does a mood piece

and adding one more from Newsday

and I should probably add Daschle in my schadenfreude list: remember his
Daschle: Anything but Clinton
Who will implement that for us now?
Also, whatever happened to those detailed questionnaires used in vetting?…
and as Donna Darko pointed out, the ultimate explanation of the “I screwed up” palooza is at Cinie’s World
Whenever now-President Black Obama wants pity, sympathy and absolution, he calls himself a “bonehead” or a “screw-up.” When he wants to divert attention from his “boneheaded screw-ups” he calls them “distractions.” Both of these terms are signals to his defenders in the mainstream media and blogosphere to pick up the torch and light the way to forgiveness. It’s been going on for at least two years, and so far, it works like a charm.

Pretty funny.
I think the truth is less that Obama screwed up than that he didn’t care about his people’s backgrounds. I mean, the media covered his behind thru the whole campaign, ignoring questions about his own past. I’m sure he never expected anyone would question his magnificent wisdom and judgment now.
If only we could get other idiots like Summers and Geithner thrown under the bus with Daschle.

What he should have said, and we all know is the truth is, “I’m a screw up.”

Maybe he thought because he got Geithner through, then Daschle wouldn’t be a problem.
O- well.
What happened to that judgment I heard so much about?

He did screw up. He let the mass hypnosis wear off after the election. New dose coming down the pike. Time to turn off your TV and read the transcript.

Obama’s JUDGMENT was wrong. He thought it was OK to not pay up but the PEOPLE have spoken. Suck on that one!!

Is this a ploy? Why is he only acknowledging he screwed up about Daschle’s taxes?

They make it sound like this is the first time he’s “made a mistake”. That’s what he says every time his unsavory connections meet the light of day (think Wright, Ayers, his OWN tax “mixups”, Samantha Powers, Jon Favreau, need I go on????)

Cinie figured it out. He “screwed up” when he wants pity or sympathy.

Deja_Vu
The view that the job title is more important than the job.
It seemed that particular attitude was primarily restricted to middle managers who didn’t want to go anywhere else because they survive by blowing all kinds of smoke. I didn’t think this country was looking for the failed middle manager.
Effective middle managers don’t want to stay indefinitely in that particular cubicle.
Menken may be right in one respect.
We’ve had the dedicated office holder/seeker, who throughout his lifetime was happily blowing smoke, that worst nightmare middle manager, hoisted upon us.
And we don’t deserve it. I personally think Menken’s wrong about that.
