It seems Obama’s rumor spreading machine is now in full force trying to spread the Eagleton meme
In memos, e-mails and phone calls this week, Obama campaign officials have urged surrogates and allies to mention Republicans who are “nervous” about the Palin pick and to link those worries to George McGovern’s aborted vice presidential pick of Thomas Eagleton in 1972, according to three Democratic surrogates.
That year, McGovern rescinded the pick after learning that Eagleton had been treated for depression
Someone seems to be really pissy at being overtaken in popularity by Palin
On Wednesday, the campaign’s chief surrogate wranglers distributed a three page compilation of quotes from Republicans concerned about the Palin pick.
Oh, fuzzy memories about the “Clintons are racist” memo. The defense there was “we didn’t give it to the media”. Riiight. Like this one won’t be either.
Good times, good times!
Again, McGovern was a Democrat. Who lost epically. Is this a good analogy?
Of course the best response here is:
So, how long since Biden has been depressed then?
Update
So guess who was the surrogate taking this on? Andrew Sullivan!
How long can Obama continue to keep Biden in the VP slot as it becomes more and more apparent that the Palin selection has fundamentally altered the race, and he’s now headed for a 3-5 point defeat rather than the coronation that everyone on the left (and many on the right) had expected?

So is this supposed to be equating Palin to Eagleton, who was treated for depression? Is Team Obama once again suggesting that women get “blue” and “their claws come out”? Give me a friggin’ break!

Yeah, they can’t even get their own smears right! It’s really weird. When they were running against Hillary the had a perfect on-message machine. And now somehow the wheels seem to be coming off.
Well, good. Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving bunch of bastards. If anything, I think Biden has more to worry about. Giuliani said it well at the RNC convention: if I were Biden, I’d want that VP thing in writing!

Whoever started this meme about replacing Governor Palin as the VP candidate must be smoking something.
In the first place, she is a gift that will keep on giving.
In the second place, don’t compare John McCain to George McGovern in any way. John McCain is a true American who fought for this country and gave us the better part of his life in Uniform. He is a man of principle who stands by his word. He is not stupid.
As Rudy Giuliani said, as was pointed out by another poster, Biden had better ask for that nomination in writing – he just might become another flip-flop.
I can’t wait to see the Palin-Biden debate. She’ll chew him up and spit him out. I hope she reminds him of the things that he said about Obama in the primaries.

George McGovern piloted 35 bomber missions over Europe in World War II and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. He didn’t get shot down or spent years as a POW, but if your intention is to prevent diminishing the efforts of men who have honorably served their country, ignoring George McGovern’s military record does just that.
